How to convert HTML to Markdown

Three steps from HTML to Markdown you can use in a README, notes or a wiki.

  1. Add your HTML

Paste HTML into the HTML input box: a whole web page or just a part of one. You can also drop an .html file onto it or click Open file. Click Sample to try it with a small bookshop page.

  2. Choose your Markdown style

Pick how headings, list bullets, code blocks and links are written. Keep Only the main content on to leave out the menu, header and footer of a full page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paste a whole web page?

Yes. Paste the full page source and keep Only the main content on: when the page marks its main content with <main> or a single <article>, the menu, header and footer around it are left out. Scripts, styles and form fields are always removed.

Are tables kept?

Yes, with GitHub tables and task lists on (the default). The first row becomes the heading row, left, centre and right alignment is kept, and a cell that spans several columns is followed by empty cells. Lists, quotes and pictures inside a cell become plain text, because Markdown tables can only hold one line per cell.

Which Markdown style do I get?

You choose: headings with # or underlined, list bullets -, * or +, code blocks fenced with ``` or indented, and links in the text or listed at the end. Code blocks keep their language, so <code class="language-js"> becomes ```js.

Does the HTML run or load anything?

No. The HTML is read as text into a separate, inert document: its scripts never run and its pictures are not loaded. Picture links stay in the Markdown as ![description](address).

Is my HTML uploaded or stored?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser, so your text never leaves your device. Our server only records that one operation was done, along with your network address, so the daily limit shown above the tool can be applied.
