How to Convert WebP to PNG (When an Image Won’t Open)

By teamJUH · Published 6 November 2026 · 4 min read

It’s a familiar moment: you save an image from a website, and instead of a normal picture you get a .webp file. Your editor won’t open it, or an upload form says the format isn’t allowed. The image is fine; it just needs to be in a format everything understands.

This guide shows how to turn it into a PNG in seconds with the free WebP to PNG converter, and when JPG is the better choice.

What is a WebP file, and why won’t it open?

WebP is an image format made for websites. Its files are small, so pages load quickly, and that’s why so many sites use it. Every current browser shows WebP, so you never notice, until you save the picture. Some image editors, older programs and upload forms still don’t accept it.

Don’t just rename the file. Changing photo.webp to photo.png changes the name, not the image inside, and many programs will still refuse it or report it as damaged. It has to be properly converted.

How to convert WebP to PNG

  1. Open WebP to PNG and click Choose WebP files, or drag them onto the page. You can add up to 50 at a time.
  2. Click Convert. There’s no quality to set, because PNG keeps every pixel of the picture.
  3. Click Download for one file, or Download all as ZIP for several.

Transparent areas stay transparent, and the picture keeps its size in pixels. Photo details such as the location are removed. The images are converted on your own device and are never uploaded.

PNG or JPG?

  • Choose PNG for logos, icons, screenshots and anything with a transparent background or small text. Edges stay crisp.
  • Choose JPG for photos, especially to email or upload them. The file is much smaller and opens everywhere. Use WebP to JPG. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

This is normal. WebP saves space by dropping detail the eye barely notices, while PNG stores every pixel exactly. In our own tests, a 4.5 KB logo became a 19.5 KB PNG, and a photo-style picture went from 108 KB to 1.8 MB.

Converting also can’t bring back detail the WebP has already lost. The PNG will look the same as the WebP, not better. If the file is too big, use JPG for photos, or make it smaller with the Image Compressor.

What about animated WebP?

A PNG made here is a still picture. If your WebP is animated, you get one image showing its first frame; the movement is lost.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.

Will I lose quality?

No. PNG keeps the picture exactly as the WebP shows it, so nothing further is lost.

Are my images uploaded?

No. They’re converted on your device and never leave it. Our server only counts how many were converted, so the free daily limit can be applied.
